Isla Cristina
 This
is a municipal district in the falt lands, 7 km form Islantilla and
56 from Huelva. Its inhabitants are called Isleños. The city was
found by Valencian and catalan fishermen who settled here in the
18th century, in what was they known as La realIsla de la Higuerita,
which was renamed as Isla Cristina in honour of the reigning Queen
at that time
It made up part of a series of island barriers separated from the
coast , which today are joined to the mainland forming a wetlands
ecosystem.
The sea and its derivative industries are its main source of wealth.
It was named as a city in 1924, and here one of the first newspapers
in Andalucia, La Higuerita, was published in 1915. The city has
developed around the fishing port, and has important salted fish
factories; the streets of the city open into wide avenues and green
areas.
With the most important areas being the Fishermen's neighbourhood,
the beautiful landscapes of the ria and the splendid Dolores and
Gran Poder churches, built in this century.
In July for a week the Carmen fiestas are held including musical
events and a magnificent procession with the Virgen along the ria.
Also Isla Cristina celebrates its famed Carnivals in February. The
whole town participates is musical contests, fancy dress, parades
and prize givings-
